FILM REVIEW
                                   Debt

‘Debt’ is a State Award winning Malayalam short film cast by the famous actor Lal and the new face Aryan. The story is written by Sachi and the film is directed by Lal Jnr under the production of Lal Creations.
It is a completely emotional movie which focuses on a father son relationship and how a serious problem in their life changes the usual flow of currents of life that leads to the utmost anger and grief. The film takes us in to a family in which the father’s business is collapsed due to the global depression and the whole sources of the wealth are under the threat of confiscation with a number of debtors waiting outside. The suicide attempt made by the mother who died later and the father who was saved creates a pain-stricken atmosphere where the son realizes the burden he has to bear for his family. But as a son brought up seeking only a happy and luxurious life finds just a question mark before him and becomes very upset and utterly ruined in front of life. Consequently he turns to be angry towards his father and at a point of time he loses his sense and conceives of an attempt on his father’s life.
The movie reveals the mindset of a father who wants to depend on his son whom he trusts to be a consolation but was altogether distressed when he heard the blaming words “couldn’t you have burnt into ashes?” .While the father goes to die by turning on the gas stove by himself the movie makes us think whom should we blame whether the father for bringing up his son offering all the luxuries without informing any of the problems or the son for not having a sense of responsibility towards his father and taking a quick decision to murder and run away with his father’s Life Insurance amount.
On the whole ‘Debt’ is a realistic movie which throws light on the modern society in which money is important above all and the tremendous value of intimate relationships becomes loose. In a quest for money and ecstasy in life some valuable things are getting lost which are the founding stones of good society. Thus the movie conveys a message to the youth who fail to face the realities of life which are assumed by them a bed of roses.
