ANOTHER INSPIRING STORY, YET
AGAIN…
We all love
listening to motivational and inspirational stories. Perhaps the reason is that
such stories, even if it is for a few moments, take us out of the routine
lethargies of our pointless lives and give us a new sense of direction and
hope, and all of a sudden attribute new meaning and color to it, or at least
appear to do so. And there have always been many people who thrilled us with
such oratory skills. But the ones that stay in our hearts forever are the ones
that are truly from ones heart,
stories born out of experience, stories that echo of real tears, struggles and
success.
On 23rd
January 2014, Thursday, the members of Unity Women’s college had the rare
privilege of enjoying such a story, a wonderful one. Not just the story part,
but the entire lecture was tremendous, as could be understood from the rapt
attention paid to it by the audience. The Mozart on stage, Dr.Debashish
Chatterjee, enchanted us with his words of wisdom and knowledge right from the
start, right from the point where he addressed all in front of him as friends, placing himself on an equal
ground with the students and teachers among the audience, playing the part of a
true virtuoso. Perhaps it was this ability of his to humble himself in spite of
being a great academician and the
director of a universally acknowledged institution that helped him to
successfully establish a strong rapport with the audience. And to paraphrase
Gandhi, it is always amazing how you can feel honored by the humility of
others. Going on, his theory about the Theory
of Life was one that made absolute sense to me, and I can’t say that about
a lot of theories in a very long time. True, we all formulate our very own
theories as we grow up, theories that prioritize our inner most desires and
needs, whether we know it or not. But I'm sure not many actually realized it until
yesterday. As for me, I realized that our lives turn out the way it does as a
result of the theories that we create
for ourselves and put into practice, and few external forces have influence
over it.
Like a true
wizard, Dr.Chatterjee kept the best for the last-his own eye opening story of
how a young boy born to a family with little means in West Bengal had a theory
that launched him in to a position of fame and respect, a simple yet powerful
theory-to do well. Again, he amazed us all with what seems to be his hallmark:
humility; and that, I believe is more inspiring than anything else in a great
personality. He can be sure that his story will
stay in our hearts, and for a very long time.
